The piano is the part that makes this gym work from the very beginning. It stands at one end of the mat, white keys facing up the way a baby lies, so a newborn who cannot yet hold a rattle can still make something happen by kicking. That is the whole trick of a kick-and-play gym: it gives a baby who can only move their legs a way to cause an effect.

Above the mat, a rainbow-striped arch carries a sunflower mirror, two hanging rings and four bear rattles in blue, pink, orange and green. A baby on their back tracks them first, swipes at them a few weeks later and eventually catches one - which is the sequence the arch is there to draw out.

The mat itself is a printed jungle scene: a giraffe, a monkey, a ladybird, a mushroom-roofed house and a rainbow across the top. It matters more than it sounds, because once a baby is rolled onto their front for tummy time the print is what they are looking at, and a plain mat gives them nothing.

The maker's diagram gives the size, which most listings leave out: the mat is 75 cm by 60 cm and the arch stands 42 cm above it. That is a little under two and a half feet long - enough for a baby up to sitting age, and small enough to lift out of the way in a flat. The same diagram marks the speaker and the on/off switch on the piano panel.

It takes AA cells and they are not in the box, so add a set to the order if there is no spare pack at home. The sound and the lights both run from the panel, so flat cells mean a gym that still works for looking and reaching but no longer for kicking.
