Pakistani parents ask for this toy under three names — kinetic sand, magic sand and sand clay — and this is a full kilogram of it. The bag is printed "Soft Magic Sand" and holds 1000 g of one colour, with six molds packed alongside. Squeeze a handful and it keeps the shape of your fist; slice it and it gives way in slow, crumbling sheets, the effect children know from sand-cutting videos.

Weight is the figure to check when comparing kinetic sand prices in Pakistan. Many packs sold online hold 500 g or less, which is enough for one small mold at a time. A kilogram builds a whole castle with its towers and still leaves sand for a second child sitting opposite.

The molds are a starting point rather than the whole game. The same sand becomes a bakery counter of pressed cakes, a road with tunnels for toy cars, or a dig for a toy figure buried at the bottom of the tray.

There are eight colours: blue, pink, tea pink, purple, green, khaki (the natural sand shade), orange and yellow. Each bag is a single colour, chosen when you order. Colours can be mixed, but once mixed they stay mixed, so for siblings who each want their own, two bags in two colours settles the argument before it starts.

Because it clings to itself rather than to fingers, this is an indoor table toy. Play on a tray, a plastic sheet or a large baking dish, pick up stray grains by pressing a lump of sand onto them, and seal the bag at the end of the session so the sand stays free of dust and hair.

The bag is marked 4+ and warns that it contains small parts that are a hazard to children under four, with adult supervision required. It is also labelled "Non-Toxic Formula", the manufacturer's claim, which we pass on as printed rather than as a test of our own. It is a sensory toy, not food, so keep it away from toddlers who still put things in their mouths.
