Obstacle avoidance is the reason to look at this one over the other flying models here, and it is printed on the box rather than claimed by us. Nothing else in the range has it. For a child flying indoors it is the difference between a drone that stops short of the wall and a drone that meets the wall, which over a month of ownership is most of what decides whether a flying toy survives.

The shape is a flying wing: one broad black triangle with a swept trailing edge and a long spine, finished in blue graphic panels. Four ducted fans are recessed into the surface and each one is ringed by an LED, two glowing red and two glowing blue. Lit up in a dim room the rings do the practical job of telling you which end is the nose while looking like something out of a film.

Because it is moulded foam over a plastic core, it is light and it takes impacts by flexing. That is the right trade for a beginner aircraft: a foam wing that scuffs is recoverable, where a rigid airframe that cracks is not. The trailing edge tips are the parts that scuff first, and they are cosmetic rather than structural.

Altitude hold means it keeps its own height while the pilot steers, and one-key return turns it back towards you when it has drifted further across the park than intended. Headless mode makes forward mean away from you regardless of which way the wing is pointing, which on a symmetrical triangle is genuinely hard to judge at any distance.

There is a 360-degree flip on a button for anyone who has stopped crashing, and the kit includes a gamepad controller, a slide-out battery, a USB lead and a set of spare propellers. It also comes in a grey stealth livery as well as the black and blue one. The box is marked fourteen and up.
