Where most car-shaped cases go bright, this one goes dark. The lid is sculpted into a low supercar in gunmetal and black — a long tapered nose, a raised centre spine, moulded intakes down both flanks and wheels standing at the corners — with cyan flashes tracing the panel lines and SPEED set along the side.

The restraint is the point. A gunmetal car with two accent colours looks like a model on a shelf rather than a toy, which is why this one carries into secondary school where a bright yellow racer would not. It is also the reason it works as a desk object at home long after it stops going to school.

Inside, the base opens as a full-length bay rather than a shallow tray, so full-size pens, pencils and a highlighter lie flat along it without stacking. The photograph with pens inside shows exactly how much depth is there.

The zip runs a black-on-black loop around the body, deliberately invisible against the shell. On a bright case a contrast zip is a design feature; on a dark sculpted one it would cut the shape in half, so hiding it is the right decision.

Two things are worth knowing before ordering. Dark gunmetal shows dust more than it shows scratches, so the case wants an occasional wipe rather than never needing one. And as with every deeply moulded case, the raised wheel corners take knocks before the flat areas do.
