The magnetic pen is the whole trick. A child holds it above the board, the bead underneath follows it, and suddenly a wooden square becomes something they will sit with in silence for twenty minutes. There are no batteries, no sound, and nothing to lose under the sofa — the beads live inside the routed channels of the butterfly.

Nine pockets are numbered 1 to 9 and spread across the wings and the head. The channels wind between them, so getting a bead from the bottom of the left wing to pocket 8 is a real route with dead ends in it.
