The Color Dough Play Set is the press-and-stamp side of dough play, with nothing to assemble first. Each of the five extruders is a plunger tube: pull the handle back, pack the barrel with dough, then push, and a strand comes out shaped by that tool's outlet — a ribbed rope from one, a hollow tube from another, a flat band from the next.

Because every tool has a different outlet, the same lump of dough looks different five times over. Add the five cutters — flower, star and blossom stamps — and a child can roll dough flat, punch out shapes and then press strands around them as decoration. That is usually the point where a plain tub of dough runs out of ideas, and where this set carries on.

Five sealed cans come in the box. Colours are assorted rather than fixed, so the exact five you receive may differ from the five in our photographs, though the count never changes. Finding a third colour by kneading two together is half the appeal, and the packaging lists telling colours apart among the things it sets out to teach.

Nothing needs building, batteries or a plug. The plungers are sized for small hands to load and push without an adult quietly taking over, which matters a great deal to a three or four year old who wants to do it alone. Five tools and five cutters also divide neatly between two children, so cousins and siblings are not queueing for one gadget.

Dough left uncovered goes hard, so press the lids back on before the table is cleared and it will still be soft next weekend. Work over a tray or a wipeable table and the clean-up afterwards is a two-minute job instead of an evening.
