Description
Cretacolor's kneaded eraser comes from the fine-art end of the aisle. The wrap carries the full Brevillier's Cretacolor name and labels the product twice — Kneaded Eraser in English, Knetgummi in German, the term you will find on European art materials.
Inside is a soft grey block with a faintly granular surface. Work it in the hand and it turns pliable, then press it onto a drawing and lift: the tone comes up in controlled amounts, which is how an artist opens a highlight in charcoal without scratching back to bare paper.
It is a lifting tool rather than a correcting one. For taking out a written line a firm block does better. What this does well is bring a shaded area down a step, soften an edge that has gone too hard, or pull a thin catchlight out of graphite.
