This is the plain, full-length Deer colour pencil box that turns up in most Pakistani school bags, featured in our collection of <a href="color-pencils.html">color pencils in Pakistan</a>. Twelve pencils, standard length, in a slim grey card box with the parachuting boy and rainbow on the front. There is nothing clever about it, and that is rather the point: it is the size and format a school supply list usually means when it says "colour pencils, 12".

The twelve cover the colours a child reaches for first, black and brown for outlines and tree trunks, red, orange and yellow, a run of greens and blues, plus purple and pink. It is enough for map work, diagrams, poster borders and colouring pages without a child having to mix or layer shades to find what they need.

The barrels are hexagonal, so they stay where they are put instead of rolling off a sloped desk, and each is painted to match its own lead, which saves a child scribbling in the margin to work out which pencil is which. They sharpen in an ordinary school sharpener.
