This is a tabletop arcade game with a dinosaur at each end. A big green T-rex stands guard at one end of a long track, its mouth lighting up red and puffing a cloud of smoke, while a small orange dinosaur waits at the other. Between them runs a ridged orange track loaded with coloured balls, and the challenge printed on the box is simple: test your reflexes and avoid the obstacles.

The smoke is the moment children remember. When the T-rex breathes out a plume from its lit mouth, a three-year-old usually shrieks, and then immediately wants to see it again. Music, sound effects and light effects run with the game, so it feels closer to a small arcade machine than a plastic playset.

The machine measures about 44 cm long, 18 cm tall and 11 cm deep, which is big enough to be the centre of a birthday table but still fits on a desk or low shelf afterwards. A chunky paw-print wheel sits on the front end, and the rounded plastic moulding has no sharp corners for small hands to catch on.

It is a strong choice for the child who is obsessed with dinosaurs but has outgrown simple figures. Instead of lining up models, they get something that reacts: noise, light, smoke and a game they can win or lose, which keeps siblings taking turns and cheering each other on.

Preschoolers from three upwards get the most out of the effects, so set it on a table or flat floor where the smoke plume and the whole track can be seen from all sides.
