Jumbo is the whole idea here. The Dux Coloroni #712 pencils are noticeably thicker than a standard colour pencil, both in the barrel and in the lead inside it, and that suits a child who is still using a whole-fist grip rather than a proper tripod hold. A wider barrel is simply easier for small fingers to hold onto and much harder to snap when the pressure goes on.

The thicker lead is the practical benefit parents notice. A wide core puts down a broad band of colour in one pass, so filling a large area takes a few strokes instead of twenty, and it survives the heavy-handed pressure of a four or five year old far better than a thin lead does.
