Open the No. 701 and the whole set is laid out in a fitted white tray: a compass, a divider, a protractor, two set squares, a 15 cm ruler, a Dux eraser, a sharpener and a Dux HB pencil, each dropped into its own shaped slot. Nothing rolls loose, and nothing is missing from the list a maths teacher reads out in the first week of term.

The compass adjusts on a knurled wheel rather than on friction alone, and that shows up halfway through a circle. A friction compass creeps wider as the hand pushes it round, so the two ends of the arc never quite meet; a wheel holds the radius exactly where it was set. Beside it sits the divider, steel-pointed on both legs, for stepping out equal spacings along a line.

The consumables are Dux's own rather than anonymous filler. The pencil is an HB in a black barrel with gold banding, sharpened before it was packed, and it lies next to a Dux eraser and a small blue sharpener with a steel blade. A construction can be drawn, rubbed out and drawn again without opening anything else.

Four colours are made: mint green, soft pink, pale blue and turquoise. All four carry the same white blueprint printing across the lid — a circle with a triangle inscribed in it, hatched construction lines, MATH BOX lettered into a banner — and the same OPEN tab moulded into the front edge. The shell is flat rather than deep, so it lies against the copies in a school bag instead of pushing them apart.
