Description
Goldfaber Aqua sits in the middle of Faber-Castell's watercolour pencil line-up, and that position is the reason to buy it. It is a genuine step up from the red-box school watercolour pencils in pigment strength and smoothness, without reaching the price of the professional Albrecht Dürer range. The tins are marked Creative Studio Quality and Made in Germany.
The lid text explains who the range is for: the Creative Studio concept is aimed at aspiring and hobby artists. In practice that means leads soft enough to release plenty of pigment when a wet brush touches them, but firm enough to keep a point for drawing detail first. You can work the whole picture dry, then decide afterwards which parts to dissolve into a wash.
The pencils are easy to recognise, with grey barrels printed "Goldfaber Aqua" and an end dipped in the actual colour, so the tin can be read at a glance without pulling pencils out.
