Ten fruits, every one with a pair of eyes and a grin: a watermelon slice, a peach, a pineapple, a banana, an orange, a bunch of grapes, a mango, a strawberry, a pear and an apple. The faces are the reason this set works at two and three years old — a mango with a smile is a character a child names out loud, and naming it is the whole lesson.
The mango is worth buying the set for on its own. Almost every imported fruit chart skips it, and in a Pakistani nursery the mango is the fruit every child in the room already knows. Here it is cut in yellow foam with a green leaf, sitting between the grapes and the strawberry.
The pieces are thick — the watermelon slice has its rind cut as a separate green layer over the red, and the grapes are individual foam circles overlapped into a bunch — so they cast a shadow on a wall and read as objects rather than as stickers.
