A clock face that has been given a body. The yellow dial carries the numbers 1 to 12 in thick black around its edge, two googly eyes sit where a face would be, a red smile curves underneath, and the hands run out from between the eyes like a nose. Red foam arms stretch out on either side, green legs come down into big blue shoes, and a blue cap sits on a green neck at the top.

The character is doing real work. A plain dial on a nursery wall is furniture; a clock with arms and a grin is something a class talks to, and a three-year-old who has met the clock as a character will look at the numbers on it far more often than at a clock over a door.

Be clear about one thing before you buy. In every photograph the hands sit in the same position, so plan on them being fixed rather than turning. As a chart it does the first half of telling the time properly: recognising the numbers, seeing that they run round a circle rather than along a line, and learning that 12 sits at the top. That is the part that has to come before hands mean anything.
