Small children love to fix things, usually with whatever is lying in the kitchen drawer. This tool set gives them their own kit instead: a chunky orange toy drill, a hammer, pliers, a spanner, an adjustable wrench, a toy cutter and a screwdriver, all in bright red, yellow and orange plastic and all sized for small hands.

Everything lives on a shallow orange tray printed with little hammers, helmets, drills and the words TOOL SET. The tools lie in it neatly after play, which turns tidying up into part of the game and keeps the pieces from scattering round the house.

The set also comes with a row of grey bits, a socket, plastic bolts with moulded threads and an orange nut. That is where much of the play happens: children turn the bolts, try the bits, grip the nut with the pliers and tighten it with the wrench. It is good practice for hand strength and the twisting movement children later need for lids, taps and pencils.

The adjustable wrench has a knurled adjusting wheel like a real one, the tools carry little TOOL SET badges, and the cutter has a grey pretend blade, so the kit looks like the one Dad keeps in the cupboard without anything sharp in it.

The pack is marked for ages 3 and up and describes it as an educational toy. It suits role play as a mechanic, a carpenter or a plumber, and pairs well with a toy car or a doll's house that needs fixing.

Compared with our tool box carry cases and builder sets with helmets, this is the simpler, tray-based kit at Rs. 1,450.
