Description
This is the number board that teaches three things at once. Every chunky wooden numeral from 1 to 20 sits in its own recess, the English word for it is printed underneath, and beside each of the first ten numbers is a little group of fruit to count.
So a child holding the 4 can look to the right and count four avocados, then read the word Four printed below. Number shape, quantity and word all meet in one spot on the board, which is the link most counting toys leave out.
The counting pictures change fruit every time: a lime, bananas, watermelon slices, avocados and pineapples along the top row, then pears, strawberries and cherries beside six to nine. Naming the fruit is a bonus vocabulary game on top of the counting.
The bottom row holds five sign pieces with their names printed beneath them: Add, Reduce, Take, Remove and Equal. Once the numbers are known, lift out a number, a sign and a second number and build a first sum on the table.
One honest note from the printing itself: the word under the 3 is spelled There on this board rather than Three. It is a factory printing slip on the wood, not something that affects the pieces, and it makes a good find-the-mistake game for a child who is learning to read.
