Most play tents are a shape to hide inside. This one is a building. It has a front wall, side walls, a pitched roof with a scalloped edge, a doorway and three windows — and that changes the game a child plays in it. A dome is somewhere to crawl into; a cottage becomes a shop, a clinic, a kitchen, a house where someone knocks and someone answers.

The windows are the reason it works. There is a round one on the back wall inside, an oval one on the side with a rolled canvas awning above it, and a square four-pane window with its own gingham curtains. A window a child can lean out of turns into a serving hatch within about a minute of the house going up, which is more play than a zip-up door flap ever gets.

Because the walls run straight up rather than sloping in, the usable floor inside is close to the footprint the house takes up. A cone or a hexagon of the same width loses most of its space to the taper, where a child's head cannot go. Two children fit in this one sitting down.

The roof is pink and white gingham with a scalloped valance along the eaves, and the same check is used for the door curtains and the window curtains, tied back at the top so the doorway stays open. The walls are plain cream, which keeps the whole thing from being loud in a room it is going to live in for a couple of years.

Be clear on what arrives: the supplier lists the playhouse itself and nothing else. The fairy lights strung down the front in our photographs, the soft toys inside and the rug underneath are all styling — none of them are part of the set.
