A shallow wooden tray with a rectangular recess, and a set of coloured wooden blocks cut in the shapes anyone who has played Tetris will recognise — L shapes, T shapes, squares, straight bars, steps and crosses. They fill the tray completely, and the whole point is that they fill it in more than one way.

That is what separates this from a jigsaw. A jigsaw has one solution and once a child has done it three times it is finished. This tray has many, so a child who solves it goes back and solves it differently, and the second solution is harder than the first because they have to un-learn the arrangement they already know.
