Plenty of children want a night light and plenty want a squishy. This little bun is both. It is a soft, glitter-speckled steamed bun with a round smiling face and pink cheeks, and when a child pinches it, it lights up from inside with a warm glow. The box sums it up in three words: pinch it, glow.

There is no switch to find in the dark and no cable to trip over. The light is turned on by pressing the bun itself, which is exactly what small hands want to do with it anyway, so it becomes part of the bedtime routine: story, lights off, one squeeze of the bun.

It is switched on by pinching rather than plugged in, so think of it as a glowing bedtime companion rather than a room lamp. It is small enough to hold in one palm, light enough to sit on a pillow or a bedside shelf, and soft enough that it does not matter if it rolls onto the bed.

The range is sold as a rainbow mystery, and the colour arrives at random: orange, yellow, pink, purple, green or blue. Each colour glows in its own shade, and the glitter flecks show up best once the light is on.

Like every squishy it dislikes heat, so keep it off a sunny windowsill. It is a light-up toy with a small light inside, so it should not be squeezed underwater or chewed, and it suits children aged three and up.
