Description
A clutch pencil holds one thick 2.0 mm lead in a metal jaw at the tip. Press the button on the end and the jaw opens, the lead drops out under its own weight, and you stop it where you want. There is no ratchet and no clicking a few millimetres at a time, which is why architects and drawing students prefer them.
The barrel never gets shorter. An ordinary wooden pencil is a stub by the end of a project, while a clutch pencil stays exactly the same length and weight from the first day to the last, so your grip and the balance in your hand never change mid-drawing.
The 2B lead is soft and dark, suited to sketching, shading and layout work rather than fine technical lines. At 2.0 mm the lead is as thick as an ordinary pencil core, so it will not snap the way a 0.5 mm mechanical lead does when a hand presses down.
