Description
The same tree, twice. On the left panel it stands in a pale blue sky under a sun whose red rays reach out from behind a big blue cloud, with smaller clouds scattered around it and little red-and-blue birds crossing the sky. On the right panel the identical tree stands against a black sky under a yellow crescent moon with its eyes closed, surrounded by white stars. The word day is spelled out in red foam letters on one side and night on the other.
Keeping the tree unchanged is the whole design. A young child comparing the two panels is not distracted by a new picture; the only things that have changed are the sky, the light and what is in it. That is how a nursery class learns that day and night are the same world at different times, rather than two different places.
Both panels are built from layered foam cut-outs — the sun sits behind its cloud, the crescent moon stands off the black backing, the tree canopy is a separate piece from the trunk, and a green grass strip runs along the bottom of each.
