Description
Twenty-six letters, and every one of them is cut to the shape of the letter itself. There is no square behind the A and no border round the O — the piece a child picks up is the letterform, with the hole in the middle of the B, the two legs of the K and the point at the bottom of the V. That sounds like a small difference until you watch a four-year-old run a finger down the spine of an F and around its arms.
Because the letters are separate, the wall is not the only place they go. A teacher can hand out ten of them and ask who is holding the letter that starts their name. A parent can lay out C-A-T on the floor and take one letter away. A whole class can be given the set and asked to line up in order, which is a lesson no single printed chart can run.
The colours rotate through black, dark blue, sky blue, green, yellow, orange, red and purple, so a row of letters never blurs into one colour. Each is a solid piece of foam thick enough to stand on its edge, and they come with a separate red banner reading CAPITAL ALPHABETS with the model code FS-70.
Foam earns its place here for a reason paper never could: these pieces get handled. They are picked up, dropped, stepped on and pushed under a cupboard, and a card letter would be bent double inside a week. Foam takes that and a damp cloth takes the fingerprints off afterwards.

Are the letters on squares or cut to shape?
