Hold an open palm underneath her and she rises. That is the whole trick, and it is a good one — the fairy has a downward-facing sensor in her base, and as long as something flat is under her she climbs and holds height. Move the palm away and she drifts down. Nobody has to learn a remote control, which is why this one works for children who find drones frustrating.

The wings are the clever part of the design. What look like two pink translucent petals with a swirl pattern are also the rotor blades, spinning fast enough to lift her while still reading as a fairy costume when she is sitting still. Two thin arms with pink balls on the ends stick out from the waist hub and act as guards, keeping the spinning wings from catching on a sleeve or a curtain.

Above the hub she is a proper figure rather than a plain drone: pink hair pinned into a bun with a flower, a purple and pink bodice shaped like lotus petals, a pleated pink skirt over the motor housing, and small purple heels. She stands up on those heels between flights, so she can be left on a shelf and still look like a toy.

Charging is over a USB cable, which is included and is the ordinary kind — any phone charger, laptop port or power bank will do the job. There are no AA batteries to buy and nothing to unscrew. A switch on the body turns her on before you hold a hand under her.

Two practical notes. First, she flies best in a room with still air, so switch the ceiling fan off before the first try; a fan will push her sideways into a wall within seconds. Second, spinning wings and long hair do not mix — this is a toy to launch over an open floor, not over somebody's head.

The manufacturer does not print an age on this box, so this is our own guidance rather than the maker's: six years and up, with an adult nearby for the first few flights while the child works out how the palm sensor responds. Younger children enjoy watching it fly, but launching it is the part that takes practice.
