This kids piano is the TLC Electronic Keyboard, model Q-997: a compact black keyboard with 37 keys, 22 white and 15 black, a speaker grille at each end and a small Record display in the middle of the panel. A microphone and a USB cable come in the box.

It is made for a first keyboard. Three octaves of keys and one simple row of buttons are easy for a three- or four-year-old to find their way around, and the size sits comfortably on a table, a bed or a lap.

The box lists what it does: a 37-key electronic organ with 8 tone modes, 8 demo songs, volume control and a power on/off switch. The tone button turns the same keys into different instruments, the demo buttons play the built-in tunes, and the REC and PLAY buttons record what a child plays and play it straight back.

The microphone is listed on the box as an external microphone. It plugs into the keyboard on its cable, and most children use it before they touch the keys, singing over the demo songs.

Power works two ways. The USB cable runs it from a phone charger plug, a laptop or a power bank, and for cordless play it takes 3 AA batteries, which are not included.

The box calls it the best gift for the children, carries a cut-out handle on top, and prints a choking hazard warning for small parts: it is not for children under 3 years. For a child who later wants two-handed songs, the TLC 49-key keyboard is the step up.
