Toddlers want whatever the adults are holding, and the phone is top of the list. This lion-shaped toy phone gives them a keypad of their own: a friendly orange lion face with a mane around the edge, and a white screen area with twelve round, brightly coloured buttons below a pretend status bar showing the time.

Each button carries a picture — a music note, piano keys, a moon, a car, a cat, a cloud, a bell, a chat bubble, a baby, a call button, volume and a camera — and a number from 0 to 9 beside it. Pressing them plays music and sounds, and the buttons glow when they are pressed, so a child connects each press with a result.

That cause-and-effect loop is the whole point of a first phone toy. A baby learns that a particular button makes a particular sound, then starts choosing favourites, then starts copying the way adults hold a phone to their ear and talk into it.

A big yellow heart button sits at the bottom where a real phone's home button would be. The whole phone is flat and palm-sized, so it fits in a small hand, a nappy bag or a car seat pocket.

It is sold for children from 18 months. The picture buttons are part of the face rather than separate pieces, and an adult should look after the battery cover.
