This is a party game disguised as a toy. A big round nest shaped like a mother hen sits on the table with a yellow chick tower in the middle and little egg-shaped baby chicks sitting in holes around it. Switch it on and music starts, the base turns, and the baby chicks start popping up into the air at random.

The job is to catch them. Two orange scoops with long handles come in the box, one for each player, and the chicks fly off in unpredictable directions, so children have to watch, move and react fast. Whoever catches the most chicks in a round wins, and the chicks that land on the floor are the ones everyone remembers.

Because the pops are random, no two rounds are the same, and there is no way for an older child to memorise a pattern. That keeps it fair when a five-year-old plays against a parent, and it is why it works as a family game after dinner rather than only as a child's toy.

Playing on your own is just as fun: a single child can try to catch every chick in a round, then try to beat that score. The game is good practice for hand-eye coordination and reaction speed without anyone noticing that is what they are practising.

The baby chicks are small, so keep them away from toddlers who still put things in their mouths, and count them back into the nest at the end of each game so none go missing under the sofa.
