These are the long ones. Where a rounded body feather is soft and short, these are straight wing-style quills that run to a defined point, with a firm central shaft holding the vane rigid along its whole length.

That stiffness changes what they can do. A long quill stands upright in a vase or a bottle without flopping over, holds its angle in a headdress instead of drooping across a forehead, and stays where it is placed in a tall arrangement. Soft feathers simply collapse under their own length.

The firm shaft also makes them the right feather for a quill pen. Cut the thick end at an angle with a craft knife, split the nib a few millimetres, and it writes with ordinary ink — a school history project on Mughal manuscripts or early writing usually wants exactly this.
