If it has to survive being handled

Choose plastic or wood over paper. Paper quilling flowers crush under a thumb and cockle in humidity, which is fine on a framed card and wrong on a hair clip. For clips, bag charms and anything a child carries daily, the moulded loop flowers and wooden buttons hold up where paper simply does not.

If the piece has to be washed

Buy something with holes in it. Wooden buttons and felt shapes take a needle, so they survive a wash cycle on a bag or a kurta. Glue holds a decoration on display pieces and lets go the first time the item goes near water, whatever the glue promises on the bottle.

If you are gilding for the first time

Take the twenty-five sheet booklet, not the hundred. Early gilding wastes leaf on tears, static and a ceiling fan nobody remembered to switch off, and learning that on the smaller booklet costs a fraction as much. Work in still air with clean dry hands.
