Some shops call it a walking cat, and from across the room it does look like a round yellow kitten. Up close the black stripes on its head and the words Lovely Happy Tiger on its chest settle it: this is a tiger cub, with big glossy eyes, orange ears and chunky orange paws.

Switch it on and it walks forward on its own, playing cheerful music while LED lights flash through the side of its body. The combination is what holds a young child's attention: something that moves, sings and glows at the same time is far more interesting than a toy that only does one of those.

A soft pink cord is tied to its body, so a toddler can walk alongside it like a pet on a lead, or tug it back when it heads under the sofa. It turns the toy from something a child watches into something they take for a walk around the house.

It is made of glossy ABS plastic, which wipes clean easily and copes with being dropped off a bed. The body is round and chunky with no sharp corners, which suits the three-and-up age it is sold for, though the cord means an adult should be around for younger children.

It is a good small gift for a child who loves animals, a sibling present when a new baby arrives, or a reward toy that does more than sit on a shelf.
