This is the top of our pastel shelf and it is not a set most people should buy. One hundred and sixty sticks in a hinged wooden case is a professional's working library or a serious gift, and at Rs. 45,000 it deserves a straight explanation of what the money is actually for rather than a page of adjectives.

Three things. First, the count: 160 sticks is two and a half times our next largest set, the 64-colour Mungyo mini box. Pastel is mixed on the paper rather than on a palette, so a large set is not a luxury in the way a large paint set is — it is the only way to get the close half-tones that make a pastel portrait or landscape read properly, without overworking the surface trying to blend them.

Second, the line. This is Mungyo's Gallery Artists' Extra Fine range rather than the standard Soft Pastel boxes we also stock. Third, the case: polished wood with brass hinges and corner fittings, a black carry handle on brass mounts, and lift-out trays that stack inside it. Each stick carries its own printed paper band, so a colour can be found and reordered by name.

On price per stick the arithmetic is less alarming than the headline. Rs. 45,000 across 160 sticks is Rs. 281.25 each. Our Sakura Nouvel Carré pastels are Rs. 234.58 a stick, so this sits about 20% above them — while the everyday Mungyo ranges run Rs. 44 to Rs. 119 a stick. If your work does not need 160 close tones, one of those is the better purchase and we would rather say so.

One honest limitation. The owner's photographs show the case, the brass fittings and the stacked trays clearly, but no legible branding or specification anywhere on the case exterior, and the individual stick labels are too small to read. So we describe what is visible and quote no pigment specification, lightfastness rating or colour list.
