A single red rose made from soft foam, with the petals wrapped and shaped the way a real rose opens, and green leaves at the stem. It is priced at Rs. 50 for one rose, and the photographs show the bag the roses arrive in rather than the unit you are buying — order the number you actually need.

Foam roses hold their shape in a way paper and fabric ones do not. A paper rose creases the first time a child squeezes it and a fabric one goes limp in a Karachi summer; foam springs back. That is why they are the flower of choice for anything a class is going to handle rather than just look at.

Schools use them for the obvious things and one less obvious one. Bouquets for a farewell, decoration for a school function, flowers glued onto greetings cards, Mother's Day craft, stage decoration for a tableau. The less obvious use is counting and colour work in a nursery — a basket of identical soft roses is exactly the sort of material a maths corner runs out of.

Because you buy them singly, you buy what the project needs. A class of thirty making one card each needs thirty; a stage backdrop might need two hundred; a single teacher's desk arrangement needs six. Nothing forces you into a pack size that leaves you with sixty spare roses in a cupboard.

The rose is soft all the way through with no wire frame and no hard centre, which is the right thing for a room full of small children. They can be squashed flat in a hand and will open again.
