The word printed on this box that matters is gyro. A gyroscope inside the RFD-018 senses unwanted rotation and corrects it before you notice, which turns hovering from a task into something the helicopter simply does. Take your thumbs off the sticks and it sits there. On a two-channel helicopter without a gyro, letting go means a slow spin and then a wall.

That single component changes who can fly it. The box describes rise and fall, turning right and left, and hovering — four things, and the hovering is the one that makes the other three enjoyable. A child can stop, look at where the helicopter is, decide what to do next, and then do it, instead of reacting constantly to a machine that will not hold still.

The frame is anodised gold alloy and it is on display rather than hidden. Gold side plates run down both flanks of the fuselage, the tail boom is gold metal and even the tail rotor bracket is machined in the same finish. Against the red, white and chrome canopy it looks considerably more expensive than it is, which does no harm when it comes out of the box as a gift.

It comes with a mains wall charger rather than only a USB lead, which is more useful in practice than it sounds — no laptop to occupy, no borrowed phone charger, just a plug in the wall. The transmitter is a compact twin-stick handset with chevron grips and status lights across the middle.

It is marked fourteen and up and carries the RONGFUDA name and RFD-018 model code on the box. Give it a room with height rather than a bedroom, and expect the gyro to make the first flight far calmer than anyone in the house is expecting.
