Scacchi Dama takes two table games and puts them on the floor. The name is Italian: scacchi means chess and dama means checkers, and this box is a 2-in-1 set for both, played on a large mat that children sit or lie around instead of hunching over a small board.

The mat measures 130 x 95 cm according to the size printed on the box, big enough for two players and a couple of spectators to gather round on a carpet, a lawn or a veranda. The box art shows chunky round playing pieces that small hands can pick up and move without knocking the rest of the board over.

Size changes how young children learn these games. On a big board the diagonal jump in checkers and the knight's L-shaped move in chess are easier to see and to point at, and a parent can sit beside a child and walk through a move rather than reaching across a table.

The box describes it as a parent-child activity suitable for outdoor and indoor play, and that is exactly where it earns its price: a winter afternoon in the lounge, a summer evening on the lawn, or a school or madrasa activity day where several pairs of children take turns.

The printed age guidance is 3 and up, so a preschooler can start with checkers, which only needs the idea of moving diagonally and jumping, and grow into chess on the same mat. The set comes in a flat box with a carry handle on top for storage and taking to a relative's house.
