Noughts and crosses is usually the first strategy game a child learns, drawn on the back of a notebook in a waiting room. This version turns it into a small electronic toy shaped like a giraffe's face, with horns, ears and brown spots, and a glossy black 3 x 3 grid where the paper used to be.

Press a square and it lights up: red crosses for one player and blue circles for the other. Three in a row wins, and the light and sound effects printed on the box make the win feel like a small celebration. Because the marks are lights rather than pencil, a new game starts on a clear board in a second, with no rubbing out and no paper to run out of.

The box calls it a two-in-one game. Two children can play head to head, passing the giraffe between them, or a child can play alone against the toy itself, which makes it useful on the days when there is nobody free to play with.

Tic-tac-toe looks simple, but it teaches young children to take turns, to look for a line of three, and to notice when they have to block their opponent. Those small moments of planning ahead are exactly what early strategy play is for.

It is sized as a handheld toy, so it travels well to a restaurant, a long car journey or a relative's house, and it is bright enough to be a cheerful birthday gift for a preschooler.
