The problem with an ordinary chess set in a house with children is the pieces. A knee hits the table, the board tips, and a half-finished game ends up under the sofa. This set fixes that with magnets: every piece has a magnet in its base and holds its square, so a game can be paused, carried to another room or played in a moving car.

The board folds in half along the middle, and the folded board becomes the storage for the pieces, so the whole set closes into one slim case with nothing loose to lose. Half open, it can also stand up like a tent on a table, which is useful for setting up the next game or showing a child a position.

Files a to h and ranks 1 to 8 are printed round the edges of the black and white board. That matters more than it sounds: children following a chess book, a YouTube lesson or a school chess club can read and record moves such as e4 or Nf3 straight off the board instead of counting squares.

The pieces follow the classic Staunton shapes that a child will meet in any tournament or school competition, with a crowned king, a queen, bishops with their slit, a horse-head knight, castle rooks and pawns, in black and ivory white. Learning on familiar shapes means nothing to relearn later.

It is a thoughtful gift for a child who has just learnt the moves, a practical second set for travel, and a quiet screen-free option for long waits and road trips. Chess also asks for patience and planning, two things parents are glad to see practised.
