Junior Scrabble is the children's version of the word game, in a bright blue box covered in cartoon letter tiles that hop across the board. The box calls it two fun word games in one, and that is the point: it grows with a child from matching letters to building real words.

The tiles are chunky yellow squares printed with black lower-case letters, the way children first learn them at school, so a four-year-old can read them without help. They are drawn from a white cloth bag, and the board is a bright grid of green, blue and red squares on an orange frame, with letter-tile markers along the edges.

Younger children start with the easy game: match your tiles to letters and finish the words, which teaches letter shapes and phonics. Older children move on to making their own words crossword style, the same idea as grown-up Scrabble with simpler scoring, kept on the blue and red score cards numbered from 1 to 6.

It is a good first board game for Pakistani families who want English practice at home that does not feel like homework. Parents can play alongside, and two to four children can play together on a holiday afternoon.
