The point of this car is that you can see it working. The whole shell is clear, and underneath it sits a train of coloured gears - purple, pink, green, blue, orange - that turn against each other the moment the car starts moving. Most toy cars hide their mechanism; this one puts it on display, which is why children who are past the stage of simply pushing a car along tend to sit and watch it instead.

Lights run through the body while it drives. They sit low, among the gears and along the base, so the colour comes up through the clear plastic rather than shining out of two headlamps. In a lit room it looks pleasant; with the lights down it throws colour across the floor, and that is when most children want it switched on.

The box lists what it does in four words: lights, sound, linkage gear, universal wheel. Linkage gear is the meshed train you can see. Universal wheel is the usual bump-and-go arrangement on cars of this type, where the car turns itself and carries on after it meets a wall or a chair leg instead of sitting there with its wheels spinning.

It is not a remote control car and it is not meant to be one. Switch it on, put it down, and it drives itself - which suits a younger child who wants the toy to do something without having to steer it, and suits a room where a controller would simply get lost.
