This is the budget-friendly first phone for a baby who has decided the family mobile is the most interesting object in the house. It is a pastel unicorn with a sleepy closed-eye face, a rainbow horn and a colourful mane running down one side, with a white keypad below.

Twelve round buttons carry simple pictures: a music note, piano keys, a moon, a car, a cat, a sun, a bell, a chat bubble, a baby, a telephone, a light bulb and a camera. Pressing them plays sounds, and a heart-shaped button at the bottom sits where a real phone's home button would be.

Babies learn quickly which button makes which sound, and toddlers start holding it to their ear and chatting, which is exactly the pretend play a first phone is for. The picture buttons also give parents easy words to say together — car, cat, moon, sun.

It comes in three soft colours: pink, blue and yellow, each with a differently coloured horn and mane. The body is flat and light, easy to hold, and fits a nappy bag or a car door pocket.

At Rs. 695 it is an easy gift for a baby shower, a first birthday or a sibling's return gift bag. The buttons are part of the keypad rather than loose pieces, but an adult should look after the battery cover.
