Description
The name says unlock, and that is the game. Three of the four posts are painted red, yellow and white and carry little side pegs, so each shape has to be turned until its cut-out lines up before it will slide down, like fitting a key into a lock.
The fourth post is different again: a threaded wooden screw. Its round discs do not drop, they twist down the thread, turn after turn. That wrist-twisting movement is the same one a child later uses to open a bottle or turn a door handle, and few sorting toys practise it.
Each keyed post has its own shape. The red post takes squares, the yellow post rectangles and the white post triangles, while the screw post holds the round discs. Pieces come in blue, pink, green, yellow and red, so there is plenty to sort by colour as well as shape.
Because every post works a little differently, a child who has solved one still has three to go, so the toy asks for concentration rather than just filling a peg.
