This is the crossword board game played the Scrabble way. Each player draws seven letter tiles, builds a word across or down the board so it connects with the words already there, and scores the letter values plus any bonus squares it covers. When the tile bag runs dry and someone plays their last tile, the highest score wins.

The folding board is the familiar 15 x 15 grid with a star at the centre for the first word and coloured premium squares spread across it: double and triple letter scores, and double and triple word scores. Learning where those squares sit, and saving a Z or Q to land on one, is where a casual player turns into a dangerous one.

There are 100 letter tiles, each printed with its letter and point value, and two of them are blank. A blank can stand for any letter the player chooses, which is often the difference between a seven-letter word and a stuck rack. Four green tile racks keep each player's letters hidden, and a cloth bag holds the tiles for fair draws.

Few games build English vocabulary and spelling as painlessly. Children reach for longer words to score more, look up whether a word is allowed, and meet new words across the board from their parents. It is a natural fit for O-level and matric students who need wider vocabulary, and for grandparents who have been waiting years for a worthy opponent.

The box is marked for ages 10 and up and two to four players. A game with two takes under an hour; with four, allow longer and keep a dictionary nearby to settle challenges.
