A good activity cube replaces a pile of single-purpose toys with one object a baby can turn round and round. This one has something different on each face, and the lid opens so the whole cube becomes a storage box for its own pieces at the end of the day.

One side carries a four-key xylophone with a little beater slot, and below it a row of pegs that push in and pop out. Another side has a textured panel with a pink block, a yellow ball and a teal shape to post through. The top is a shape-sorter lid with a bead maze above it: loops of wire with coloured beads and flowers to slide, plus stretchy pull strings with rings at the end.

The remaining sides are made of rainbow-coloured slats with gaps between them, so a baby can reach through, grab the balls and chunky shapes inside and pull them out again. That reaching, grabbing and posting is exactly the kind of fine motor practice babies need between about one and three years.

Loose pieces come with it, including a purple ball with holes, a green multi-sided shape and a pink cube, and the stacking figures on the side string can be threaded and slid.

It needs no batteries, makes no electronic noise and has no screen, which many parents prefer for a toy their baby will use every day. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Keep an eye on the smaller pieces with babies who still put everything in their mouths.
