Look closely at any letter on this board and there is a dashed line running through the middle of it. That is the writing stroke — the path a pencil takes to form the letter — printed inside the piece a child is already holding. Most alphabet boards stop at recognition. This one carries the first step of handwriting on every single piece, for no extra money.

All twenty-six capitals are here, each in its own cut recess, each lifting out on a small red knob. The knob keeps the board usable from about two, when the job is simply taking pieces out and putting them back, and the tracing lines start to matter at four or five when a child begins to copy letters onto paper.

The letters are painted in flat, saturated colours on a white board with a yellow band top and bottom.
