Small letters are what a child actually reads. Capitals are what most alphabet toys teach, which is why a four-year-old who can shout every capital still stalls on a page of a story book. Every letter lifts out on a green knob set into its face. That knob is not decoration — it forces a pincer grip between thumb and finger, which is the same grip a pencil needs later, and it makes the board usable from about two, long before the letters mean anything.

Inside each letter there is a picture, and under it the English word: an apple in the a, a car in the c, a dog in the d, an elephant in the e, grapes in the g, a monkey in the m, a penguin in the p, a snake in the s. That gives an adult something to talk about on every single piece instead of just naming the letter twenty-six times.

One honest note. We have photographed more than one of these boards and the picture words are not identical on all of them — one prints bee under the b, another prints banana. The letters are always the full a to z; the words vary a little between production runs, so treat the word list as a guide rather than a fixed specification.
