Description
Two good toys are bolted together on this board. The first is a stacker: five wooden posts, each taking a graded stack of one shape, biggest at the bottom. The second is a gear train: a toothed wheel sits at the base of every post, the teeth mesh with their neighbours, and turning one by hand sets the others going. A child who has only ever stacked rings meets cause and effect here for the first time.
The five shapes are square, circle, hexagon, triangle and heart, and each one lives on its own post in its own colours. That separation is deliberate — a triangle will physically not sit on the square post, so the board tells a child when they have gone wrong instead of an adult doing it.
The gears are the part that gets played with longest. Green, yellow, red, blue and a purple heart-shaped one, each with cut teeth around its rim, all sitting flat on the board and touching. Turn the yellow one slowly and watch the red one turn the other way. There is no explanation for a three-year-old in that sentence, but there is a discovery.
Everything lifts off. The gears come away from the posts and the shapes come off above them, so the board empties into a heap and gets rebuilt from scratch, which is where the sorting and the colour matching actually happen. Rebuilding it correctly is a harder job than it looks the first time.
