A boy in a red-and-yellow cap, a blue T-shirt and white trousers stands with one hand on his hip and the other dropping coloured scraps into a bin — and the bin is smiling up at him. The words clean your school arch across the top in black lowercase on the white border, and a strip of green grass runs along the bottom. That is the whole piece, and every part of it is doing the same job.

The smiling bin is the reason this works on children rather than at them. A sign that says do not litter is an instruction; a bin with a face is an invitation, and a five-year-old will cross a corridor to feed it. Schools that have tried both will tell you which one actually changes what happens on the floor.

It is cut to the shape of the picture rather than being a rectangle with a picture inside it. The white outer border follows the outline of the black cloud shape behind the boy, so it sits on a wall as an object rather than as a poster, and it does not need a frame or a straight edge to look deliberate.

The natural places for it are the ones a chart never reaches: beside the actual bin in a corridor, at the canteen door, in the stairwell where wrappers collect. It is not a teaching chart and does not pretend to be one — it is a reminder placed where the litter is, which is why schools usually buy two or three rather than one.

The lettering is lowercase throughout, which is a small thing that matters for young readers: clean your school is the form a child will meet in a reading book, not the block capitals of a warning sign. The tone matches the smiling bin rather than fighting it.
