A first keyboard does not need to look like a keyboard. This one is a smiling white cow with black horns, pink ears and a grey muzzle, standing on black hooves, and its body carries a row of eight rainbow-coloured piano keys and six animal buttons above them.

The keys run Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Si, Do and are numbered 1 to 7 and back to 1, so a child can follow simple number songs or learn the sol-fa scale. Each key is a different colour, which gives parents an easy way to say press the green one, then the orange one.

The six raised animal buttons play animal and character sounds: a frog, a sheep, a dog, a baby, a cow and a duck. Children love matching the picture to the noise and copying it back, which is early listening and speech practice disguised as play.

Flashing lights and a mode selector add variety, switching between playing notes and other sounds. The window box is printed Cow Piano, Lights and Music, Ages 3+, with the line Play in palm, mommy don't worry.

It stands on its own four hooves on a table or floor, so a toddler can play standing up or sitting down. It is battery operated.
