A toy drum is fun for an afternoon; a drum kit is what a child who really loves banging on things actually wants. This Jazz Drum set is laid out like a small real kit: a big bass drum in the middle, four smaller drums around it, a cymbal on a stand above, a foot pedal and a pair of drumsticks.

The bass drum is the showpiece. Its front face is clear, and when the pedal hammer or a stick hits it, the vibration sets off flashing rainbow lights inside, so every kick of the pedal is seen as well as heard. Built-in rhythm and sound functions add music to drum along with.

Using the pedal with a foot while playing the drums and cymbal with both hands is real coordination practice. Children start by hitting everything at once, then begin to copy simple rhythms, and before long they are playing along to the songs they hear at home or at school events.

The drums have a blue-green gradient finish with silver rims, and the kit stands on grey legs at a height made for a seated child. It suits a playroom or a corner of a bedroom, and it is the kind of gift that gets remembered at a birthday or Eid.

The set is battery operated for the lights and sounds, and is recommended for ages three and up. It is louder than a small toy drum, as any drum kit is, so it is best enjoyed at playtime rather than nap time.
