Every child wants to bang a drum, and every parent wants it to sound a little better than a steel pot and a wooden spoon. This Flash Drum is the compromise: a round pink and yellow drum with a big translucent drum head that lights up in rainbow colours every time it is hit.

Tap the drum head with the two green drumsticks and it answers with drum sounds and flashes of light. There are nine different drum sounds and nine songs to play along with, plus game modes that challenge a child to follow a rhythm. Buttons on the rim change the mode and the volume — and yes, it can be turned down.

The light show is part of the learning. Seeing a flash on every beat helps a young child connect hitting the drum with making sound, and following the songs builds rhythm, coordination and listening.

It measures about 21 cm across and 7 cm high, with a carry handle moulded into the rim, so it goes from the lounge to a cousin's house without fuss. Both sticks are chunky and rounded for small hands.

It is battery operated and marked for ages three and up.
