A calibrated nib is the whole product. Every pen puts down the same line width from the first stroke to the last, and each width is a fixed known figure rather than however hard you happened to press. That is why these are the pens architecture and design students are told to buy: a plan that uses 0.1 for hatching, 0.3 for the outline and 0.8 for the section cut reads correctly because those three widths never drift into one another.

Line weight is how a drawing shows depth without any shading at all — a heavy contour at the front, a lighter one behind it, the faintest for what is furthest away. The 0.05 deserves a warning of its own. A nib that fine is easily crushed: it needs almost no pressure, it does not enjoy rough paper, and pressing it like a ballpoint will finish it in one session. Keep it for the lightest work and let the 0.3 and 0.5 do the pushing.

For anyone inking over pencil, the practical routine is to let the ink dry properly before erasing underneath, because a fresh fineliner line smears under a rubber and takes the drawing with it. On smooth paper the ink dries quickly; on absorbent sheets it spreads and the thin widths stop reading as different from one another.

Cap them firmly and store them flat or nib-down in a pot. A fineliner left uncapped dries from the tip inward, and it is always the fine widths that go first, which is exactly the opposite of what you want from a set bought for its 0.05.
