It solves one specific, maddening problem. Some papers refuse to take a wash: the water gathers into beads, slides away from where you put it, and dries as blotches with hard rims. That happens on heavily sized sheets, on hot-pressed papers with a slick surface, and on any sheet where a hand has rested long enough to leave skin oil. Ox gall breaks the surface tension so the water lies down and spreads evenly instead of pulling itself into drops.

The dose is smaller than people expect. A drop or two goes into the jar of clean water you are painting from, not into the pan or the tube, and the whole jar becomes more willing. Adding too much is a real mistake rather than a harmless one — the wash starts running where you did not want it, and the water can foam on the brush.

It also helps colour take on a surface that resists it: over a previously varnished passage, on very smooth board, and in paper marbling, where the same wetting action is what lets floated colour spread into a skin across the tray. Anyone teaching a watercolour class in a room full of mixed papers ends up keeping a bottle on the table for the sheets that misbehave.

The name is not a decoration and buyers should know it before ordering: ox gall is derived from cattle bile. It is a traditional artists' material and has been made this way for centuries, but anyone avoiding animal-derived products should choose a synthetic wetting agent instead.

This is a watercolour medium and not a general-purpose flow aid. Acrylic and oil have their own flow improvers that work with the very different binders in those paints, so keep this bottle to water-based transparent work where it belongs.
